“Insegnare” l’empatia - “Teaching” empathy

“Insegnare” l’empatia

“Teaching” empathy

I remember the time when Franco had to organise a laboratory on empathy for the students at Isipsé. As it was usual in these cases, his inner state was of a certain agitation, at the same time he was ready to catch any useful suggestion from people around him. He felt the task was challenging, in particular he was concerned that all the students could enjoy the experience. Thinking back, it seems that for him the organisation of the laboratory was not as important as making everyone at ease, both himself and the participants. This was not clear to me at that time, but it comes back now, as something to reflect on. His approach was not only coherent with the concept of empathy (which was the topic of the laboratory) but also addressed the tendency of our time to neglect the importance of feeling at ease. Very much focused on efficiency, performance, productivity as we are, we lose touch with our affectivity,  we become alienated, the “malaise” conquers us. Franco knew the importance of recognising the need of each one to speak and feel at ease; something in him that was not always rightly appreciated. The value of his contribution, however, is unchanged: a seed that has sprouted and keeps doing so. As he taught us, we come back on empathy to keep creating communication between ourselves and the world, to be able to feel at ease, in the therapeutic context and in life.

Il Modello Trasformativo (2) - The Transformational Model (2)

The Transformational Model (continuation)
Franco here, always with reference to Lachmann, brings further forward how each partner in the relationship produces a shift, a kind of moving to another position in the other. It is as if such reciprocal effect was subtle, hardly perceptible. It is like something that induces us to change in ways that perhaps we don’t perceive, but inadvertently pushes us to new positions.
In other words, Franco says, the change, the transformation is co-created by the therapist and the patient together; but the way we influence the other follows its own original path: it’s not symmetrical or comparable in any way.
What’s important is the transformation which, as such, doesn’t follow any foreseeable scheme or any balanced distribution. It is a creation, something new.

-          Beatrice Beebe e Lachmann (2002; Lachmann, 2000):

o   Showed that development is in a constant state of active reorganization and transformation
-          Beatrice Beebe and Lachmann (2002; Lachmann, 2000)
o   Discussed that (in interactions between child & environment or patient and therapist): Each partner affects the other so that from one point of time to the next, neither the child nor the environment, neither the patient nor the therapist, remains the same

Change and development and the role that each one of us plays every day in the relationship with others, influencing not only the relationship but also how the other one will evolve…today the words that Franco put on this slide give us inspiration for developing a positive response to terrorism. Each and every one can change the situation and contribute to its transformation towards a better future.

Nutrimento psicologico - Psychological nourishment

I'm baffled by your idea on the goal of life, Charlie Brown.
You say that we are on the earth to make others happy?

That's right!

Then what are others there for?

Kohut considered psychological nourishment one of the most important ideals to pursue
Meaning of psychological nourishment:
“A bond between human beings more powerful than love to contrast destructivity and dehumanization”

Today I would like to remind a very important point that Franco used to highlight of Kohut’s contribution (see also the post of 7th January 2014), which I find of great value in this moment, when huge numbers of people are trying to reach Europe, escaping from their own countries, often losing their life in the Mediterranean or in some abandoned lorry, and among them there are children.

What makes it so, that we still struggle to overcome poverty and dictatorship, with all its violence?

We should probably open our eyes on the lack of awareness about human affective needs, which are equal to material ones.

Psychological nourishment is far from being optional, as it was well demonstrated already in the ‘50s by Spitz and others. Only individuals who receive a sufficient amount of psychological nourishment are able to take care of themselves and others. At individual, family and society scale.

Let’s take action so that we shall never again have to see the photos of children drowned in the Mediterranean, in the desperate attempt of migrating towards a better land: let’s ensure that everyone receives sufficient psychological nourishment. It is time that the so called developed countries lead the way and start to consider the problems the world is facing – and their solutions – in terms of both their material and psychological component.

Dopo due anni, e un pezzetto - After two years, and a bit

After two years, and a bit

I wrote the following in the Autumn, at the second anniversary of Franco’s death, but for some reason it comes out only now.

Dear Franco,

after two years we are still here with you. A few days ago Thich Nhat Hanh was taken to hospital: his teaching on the nonexistence of birth and death are so fresh and lively, on our continuation in many ways but first of all through the people who have loved us. There is a part of you, a part of him, in each one who has loved you, it is deceptive to think it all ends up. On the contrary, it is often after death, at some time distance, that our contribution to life becomes real as part of humanity’s progress, to which each one of us contributes with one’s own life. I think it is Rudolf Steiner who wrote about this, or some other spiritual teacher, about the fact that a certain span of time is necessary for the meaning of our life to mature and become usable, bring benefit to others. It is true that so many innovators have been understood some generations later. I think that in your work there is something profoundly important, about therapeutic work and more, something we haven’t fully understood, that will bloom and will continue to flourish. I remember how happy you were when in the last few years you were welcome with success more than ever, you’ll see, it will grow even more.

Empatia che viene dall'altra parte - Empathy coming from the other side

Empatia che viene dall’altra parte

“Prega, sorridi, pensami!

(Henry Scott Holland)

Empathy coming from the other side

Play, smile, think of me, pray for me. Let my name be ever the household word that it always was. Let it be spoken without an effort, without the ghost of a shadow upon it. Life means all that it ever meant. It is the same as it ever was. There is absolute and unbroken continuity…I am but waiting for you, for an interval, somewhere very near, just round the corner. All is well. Nothing is hurt; nothing is lost. One brief moment and all will be as it was before. How we shall laugh at the trouble of parting when we meet again!

(Henry Scott Holland)

Il mio interesse ed esperienza con la psicoterapia del trauma - My interest and experience with the psychotherapy of trauma

My interest and experience with the psychotherapy of trauma

As far as  my ideas on the psychotherapy of severe and prolonged trauma is concerned, I am in addition, almost completely indebted to the clinical work, research and teaching of Richard Mollica and his team, through more than 20 years of dialogue, direct clinical collaboration and joint teaching.
I felt supported and acknowledged by  his recent book Healing invvisible wounds. I have used  also in this power point the data of Judith Herman’s basic book : Trauma and recovery  ( 1992).

The first of December and then Christmas and finally the new year have come. Too exhausted to write. I wonder, reading these words from Franco, when we can say a trauma has been overcome and why is it so difficult for us humans to count on each other. How many invisible wounds and traumas are behind a new trauma, as for instance the attack to freedom we suffered last week in our social body with the events in Paris. The main thing in Franco’s work, in this respect, concerned above all the support he gave to Richard Mollica helping him in carrying on his innovative work with people victim of social trauma. In this slide Franco recognises his debt, but I think that his contribution to Richard was just as important. It was related to something they were both looking for, the possibility of redemption, recovery, as Herman titles, perhaps because behind a real friendship there is the hidden need to recover some loss, the kind of loss which traumatises and pushes us forever to seek reparation.

Co-Costruzione di una Relazione Empatica - Co-Construction Of An Empathic Relationship

Quadro concettuale:

Conceptual Framework:
Co-Construction Of An Empathic Relationship

Typical model of understanding:

-          - Therapist contributes empathic understanding
-           - Patient contributes availability to be empathically understood

Co-creation of empathy shapes the affective ambience of the treatment and gradually transforms the experience for both partners

It is difficult to understand this concept, its more prominent practical implications probably relating to the development of an equal relationship, which becomes more and more equal as awareness increases about what is happening between in the relationship itself. Particularly crucial appears the concept of empathy as being transformative of the experience “for both partners”.

Ottobre per te – October for you

October for you

October was the month when your father had died leaving you an orphan. The mother was left a widow with two children, you were the younger one. Living with the loss, abandonment and lingering anxiety. An event which changed the course of life and perhaps only found relief when meeting Kohut. A gentle person who has given an answer to the needs of many, a person you wanted everyone to discover. Going to the other side of the ocean to meet him, you cried “like a fountain”, perhaps the father you had always missed. Afterwards, you carefully stored a small precious note he had sent you for an appointment. Fragments of affectionate devotion which make science great.

Imparare dai pazienti - Learning from patients

Imparare dai pazienti

Learning from patients

Franco was very humble and quick to learn from patients. He had always an attitude of interest, curiosity; it was as if what the patient could bring was always completely new, something to discover. I think he was so good at listening for the pleasure of novelty, the idea that there was something to expect from the encounter with the other person. So he was very open to learn, to understand or better still to not understand, to being with the other also doing without understanding. To learn what happens, how a person moves and solves problems, but without feeling any pressure to help or any guilt feelings for his own potential limits.

Come cura l'empatia - How does empathy cure

L’empatia: come ci cura?
-        Contenimento
-        Condivisione affettiva
-        Accettazione da parte di una figura idealizzata
-        Rinforzo della coesione del Sé
-        Esperienza emozionale correttiva

Empathy: how does it cure?
-        Containment
-        Emotional sharing
-        Acceptance by an idealized figure
-        Strengthening self-cohesion
-        Corrective emotional experience
-        Creation of new organizing principles

I am not going to comment today, I’m exhausted by too much work and it comes to my mind that Franco would have disapproved such work exaggeration. He is always very near to us all, his words on empathy once again so simple and rich.

Ascoltare - Listening

Una diversa qualità dell’ascolto

Ascoltare attentamente

1.      Prestare attenzione alle proprie emozioni, monitorarle
2.      Comprendere
3.      Sintonizzarsi sui bisogni del paziente
4.      Accettare profondamente il paziente
5.      Impegnarsi affettivamente in maniera ottimale

Different quality of listening

Listening Attentively

1.      Monitoring our own emotions
2.      Understanding
3.      Attunement to the patient’s needs
4.      Deeply accepting the patient
5.      Optimal affective engagement

Franco prepared his presentations with a certain anxiety. Lately sometimes getting somebody to help him for working with powerpoint. He prepared the presentation from which are taken the citations of most of the last posts at the end of September 2007, working “as a fool”.
“A different quality of listening” was really something special in Franco. I think many people appreciated this quality of his.  Although sometimes he could be quite talkative, when he listened to you he did it with such respect and quietness – he would not make comments of any kind, just an hypothesis here and there, with much cautiousness.
His suggestion isn’t easy to practice, but calls to get involved. Differently from many others, Franco had the courage to say in simple words what needs to be done with patients – without however ever telling anyone what they should do. I hope his alumni will follow his example, because there is really need of clarity and simplicity  to help psychotherapists find the way to help those in need.

Specific and nonspecific therapeutic factors in psychoanalisis: self-righting - Lucia Pancheri e Franco Paparo

(Rivista di Psichiatria, 2003, 38, 3)

A very interesting paper written together by Lucia Pancheri and Franco, on our inner power of mental “healing” – which forces us to metaphorically return on the scene of the crime, of what has blocked the Self’s evolution, to be able to get back in the flow of life.

As the authors affirm: “Following Kohut, the Self keeps trying, all life long, to complete its development, overcoming any obstacle which might have interfered”.

There is a search for the missing developmental experiences, to be able to complete the disrupted evolution, to complete it.

Therapies have the aim to revive the inner capacity for cure and internal healing.

Apprezzando profondamente – Deeply appreciating

In ogni caso molto coinvolgente.

The Cambodian version of L.U.D.A. – by Franco, uncertain dating (anybody knows?)

This is what Franco has called the Cambodian concept of empathy. Working with Cambodian refugees, women refugees who had a role as nurses, Franco received from them a new and interesting version of his formula about empathy. Listening and understanding here go hand in hand with deep appreciation. We could say that deep appreciation includes deep acceptance and that this formula could be seen as more complete, even if less explicit than the original one. In any case a strong message. It suggests a kind of relationship which creates a very deep connection and which is down the line extremely therapeutic.

Empatia: Heinz Kohut - Empathy: Heinz Kohut

EMPATIA: Heinz Kohut

EMPATHY: Heinz Kohut

-          Kohut’s Contributions
o   Highlighted other aspects of empathy, such as psychological nourishment

-          Meaning of psychological nourishment:
o   “A bond between human beings more powerful than love to contrast destructivity and dehumanization”

-          Kohut considered psychological nourishment one of the most important ideals to pursue

-          Kohut felt that empathic understanding of difference may help to avoid social conflicts and wars

-          IN THIS SENSE, Kohut felt empathy was essential for human survival

Kohut is the first psychoanalyst to place empathy at the centre in the relationship. For me he is also the first psychoanalyst who brought to psychoanalysis the colour of a deep sense of humanity. It was a missing colour in the picture and reading his books one can feel the stress and labour he undertook to try to harmonise this colour with the other existing ones. Franco followed him on this route and he carried on in Italy Kohut’s approach with patience and perseverance. Reading Kohut and particularly what he says about empathy, is a comforting empathic experience: in his words there is such a profound understanding of the human being and of what is being sought in the therapeutic relationship. Franco fully perceived the importance of Kohut’s message and became a messenger making available an essential psychological nourishment for us all.

La dolcezza della presenza - The sweetness of presence

The sweetness of presence

Empathy is a quality of human experience which makes life bearable, desirable and finally loved. To be present for the other is the greatest hope that we can donate regarding the importance that the other has for us. But often we are not aware of this, we undervalue the preciousness of just our presence for the other and we miss many occasions for demonstrating our love. We lack empathy towards ourselves and our presence becomes poorer.
When a person leaves us, like Franco, his empathic presence remains, in my opinion. It might seem a strange phenomenon, nevertheless, within ourselves, the empathic presence of the other is as eternal, it is something which does not fade away.
Christmas is getting near, a celebration which Franco tried to escape, a moment for being together. Sometimes it isn’t possible to be present, but the sweetness of memories is always there.
