Kohut è il primo psicanalista che mette al centro della relazione il concetto di empatia. Per me è anche il primo psicanalista che dà alla psicoanalisi una grande pennellata di umanità. Mancava questo colore nel quadro e si percepisce tutta la fatica e il lavorio che Kohut si è sobbarcato per cercare di armonizzare questo colore con gli altri già presenti. Franco l’ha voluto seguire su questa strada e con tenacia e pazienza ha portato avanti in Italia l’approccio proposto da Kohut. Leggere Kohut e ciò che diceva dell’empatia è un’esperienza empatica molto confortante: nelle sue parole c’è una profonda comprensione dell’essere umano e di ciò che nella relazione terapeutica si va cercando. Franco ha colto l’importanza di questo messaggio e si è fatto cassa di risonanza mettendo a disposizione un importante nutrimento psicologico per tutti noi.

Kohut is the first psychoanalyst to place empathy at the centre in the relationship. For me he is also the first psychoanalyst who brought to psychoanalysis the colour of a deep sense of humanity. It was a missing colour in the picture and reading his books one can feel the stress and labour he undertook to try to harmonise this colour with the other existing ones. Franco followed him on this route and he carried on in Italy Kohut’s approach with patience and perseverance. Reading Kohut and particularly what he says about empathy, is a comforting empathic experience: in his words there is such a profound understanding of the human being and of what is being sought in the therapeutic relationship. Franco fully perceived the importance of Kohut’s message and became a messenger making available an essential psychological nourishment for us all.

Omosessualità - Homosexuality

Ricordo quella volta in cui rimanesti malissimo per la reazione di un collega d’oltreoceano al tuo articolo su Kohut e le omosessualità. Dal tuo punto di vista l’articolo era una grossa apertura, in un contesto che ha sempre avuto grande difficoltà a trattare questo tema in generale; parlarne in relazione a una figura importante, un punto di riferimento come Kohut,  richiedeva coraggio e molto tatto. Ma il collega, omosessuale dichiarato, avrebbe voluto probabilmente qualcosa di più deciso e non si era reso conto di quanto invece il tuo gesto rappresentasse un avanzamento sostanziale. L’articolo ti era costato molta fatica, come sempre quando dovevi scrivere, ma anche in questo caso penso che per te fosse un atto dovuto. Si era trattato di una dimensione importante nella vita di Kohut e parlarne poteva essere molto significativo per tanti. Il nostro concetto di autorità a volte ci impedisce di vedere l’essere umano nella figura di chi per noi è un’ “autorità”. Tu eri molto indipendente in questo senso e proprio per questo penso che tu abbia potuto contribuire a illuminare la figura di Kohut, riconoscendo sempre la sensatezza delle scelte e delle esperienze che lui ha fatto e quindi quelle che ognuno di noi può fare.

I remember that time you got upset because of the reaction of an overseas colleague  to your publication on Kohut and the homosexualities . From your point of view the article represented and important opening, in such a context where this was already a difficult topic overall; hence,  to speak about it in relation to some important person, a reference person like Kohut, required courage and a lot of tact. But the colleague, declared homosexual, probably wanted something more and may be didn’t realise how much your initiative was to be considered a substantial advancement. You worked hard on this article, as always happened when you had to write, but I think it was for you like a duty. Homosexuality had been an important dimension in Kohut’s life and speaking about this could be very significant for many. Our concept of authority sometimes stops us from looking for the human being in the authority figure. You were very indipendent in this respect and probably it is for this reason that you have been able to contribute to illuminate Kohut’s figure, always recognizing the meaningfulness of choices and experiences he made and thus of those we  can do too. 

Franco e l'empatia - Franco and empathy

Credo che una delle dimostrazioni più evidenti dell'importanza del concetto di empatia per Franco, sia stata la sua capacità di capire la significatività del lavoro di Kohut e la dedizione che ha posto nel tradurlo e nel farne conoscere l'opera.

Lui sapeva quanto questo fosse importante nel panorama "psi" italiano, lo sapeva istintivamente. Era una necessità, un bisogno che molti sentivano, trovare finalmente un autore psicoanalitico che sapesse parlare di empatia e riconoscerne il ruolo cruciale nella relazione terapeutica. Anche se naturalmente la maggior parte di noi non sapeva prima di che cosa esattamente avesse bisogno, nel leggere Kohut credo che molti abbiano pensato: ecco era proprio questo che cercavo, era questo che mancava.

Franco non solo ha capito l'importanza dell'opera di Kohut, ma soprattutto ha capito quanto noi ne avessimo bisogno, di quei discorsi, di quelle parole dando prova di profonda empatia. E con molta umiltà si è impegnato in ogni modo per portare quell’opera al pubblico italiano, traducendo, spiegando, raccontando.

I think that a clear demonstration of the importance of the concept of empathy for Franco, has been his cleverness in understanding how significant Kohut’s work was and his dedication to get him translated in Italian and disseminated.

He knew how important this was in the “psy” community in Italy, he knew by instinct. It was a necessity, a need felt by many, to find a psychoanalytic author able to speak of empathy and of it’s crucial role in the psychotherapeutic relationship. Although most of us didn’t know beforehand what exactly we needed, I think that when reading Kohut for the first time many of us thought: this is what I was looking for, this is what was missing.

Franco hasn’t just understood the importance of Kohut’s work, above all he understood how much we needed it, how much we needed those words, those discourses and thus he gave a demonstration of deep empathy. And with utmost humbleness he engaged for bringing Kohut’s work in Italy: translating, explaining, make you a part of it.
