EMPATIA: COME CI CURA? (CONTINUAZIONE) - EMPATHY: HOW DOES IT CURE? (CONTINUATION)

EMPATIA: COME CI CURA?
(CONTINUAZIONE)

EMPATHY: HOW DOES IT CURE?
(CONTINUATION)

-        Heinz Kohut believed that the natural tendency of the patient toward self-healing is promoted by the therapist’s empathy and understanding, that helps in removing the obstacles to the natural tendency to self-righting (Pancheri & Paparo). In the relationship with the patient, the therapist must accept some idealization by the patient, who encounters, sometimes for the first time in his life, somebody listening to him with attention and deep acceptance.
-        The therapist must coherently pursue an attitude of mutuality in his counter-transference (following D.Orange I would call  it co-transference)
-        If the couple enters in a state of syntony we can have evidences of Lachmann’s transformational model.

It is difficult to comment on this slide from Franco, so rich and full of references. Actually it would be nice if some reader of this blog could help, to go deeper. I like very much the nice feeling that it conveys of the therapeutic relationship as a place and an opportunity of exchange. “Mutuality” of idealisation as a way of seeing the best in the other. A kindness of regard that can last, even after going through a lot of difficult experiences, and which can make the fatigue of therapy seem light.

Transformation is in therapy a “couple affair”, something that stems from a deep and deeply felt relationship with another person, just like in everyday life. It is interesting to note that all the effort is in “removing the obstacles to the natural tendency to self-righting”. A very modern idea that is finding its way: we are not “wrong” or “sick”. All of us, we just need a little bit of human connection to feel good and work well.

Come cura l'empatia - How does empathy cure

L’empatia: come ci cura?
-        Contenimento
-        Condivisione affettiva
-        Accettazione da parte di una figura idealizzata
-        Rinforzo della coesione del Sé
-        Esperienza emozionale correttiva

Empathy: how does it cure?
-        Containment
-        Emotional sharing
-        Acceptance by an idealized figure
-        Strengthening self-cohesion
-        Corrective emotional experience
-        Creation of new organizing principles

I am not going to comment today, I’m exhausted by too much work and it comes to my mind that Franco would have disapproved such work exaggeration. He is always very near to us all, his words on empathy once again so simple and rich.

Ascoltare - Listening

Una diversa qualità dell’ascolto

Ascoltare attentamente

1.      Prestare attenzione alle proprie emozioni, monitorarle
2.      Comprendere
3.      Sintonizzarsi sui bisogni del paziente
4.      Accettare profondamente il paziente
5.      Impegnarsi affettivamente in maniera ottimale

Different quality of listening

Listening Attentively

1.      Monitoring our own emotions
2.      Understanding
3.      Attunement to the patient’s needs
4.      Deeply accepting the patient
5.      Optimal affective engagement

Franco prepared his presentations with a certain anxiety. Lately sometimes getting somebody to help him for working with powerpoint. He prepared the presentation from which are taken the citations of most of the last posts at the end of September 2007, working “as a fool”.
“A different quality of listening” was really something special in Franco. I think many people appreciated this quality of his.  Although sometimes he could be quite talkative, when he listened to you he did it with such respect and quietness – he would not make comments of any kind, just an hypothesis here and there, with much cautiousness.
His suggestion isn’t easy to practice, but calls to get involved. Differently from many others, Franco had the courage to say in simple words what needs to be done with patients – without however ever telling anyone what they should do. I hope his alumni will follow his example, because there is really need of clarity and simplicity  to help psychotherapists find the way to help those in need.

Specific and nonspecific therapeutic factors in psychoanalisis: self-righting - Lucia Pancheri e Franco Paparo

(Rivista di Psichiatria, 2003, 38, 3)

A very interesting paper written together by Lucia Pancheri and Franco, on our inner power of mental “healing” – which forces us to metaphorically return on the scene of the crime, of what has blocked the Self’s evolution, to be able to get back in the flow of life.

As the authors affirm: “Following Kohut, the Self keeps trying, all life long, to complete its development, overcoming any obstacle which might have interfered”.

There is a search for the missing developmental experiences, to be able to complete the disrupted evolution, to complete it.

Therapies have the aim to revive the inner capacity for cure and internal healing.

Apprezzando profondamente – Deeply appreciating

In ogni caso molto coinvolgente.

The Cambodian version of L.U.D.A. – by Franco, uncertain dating (anybody knows?)

This is what Franco has called the Cambodian concept of empathy. Working with Cambodian refugees, women refugees who had a role as nurses, Franco received from them a new and interesting version of his formula about empathy. Listening and understanding here go hand in hand with deep appreciation. We could say that deep appreciation includes deep acceptance and that this formula could be seen as more complete, even if less explicit than the original one. In any case a strong message. It suggests a kind of relationship which creates a very deep connection and which is down the line extremely therapeutic.

L.U.D.A.
Listening - Ascoltare
Understanding - Comprendere
Deeply - Profondamente
Accepting - Accettando

This was Franco’s proposal. Something practical that we can always take with us. An acronym that helps us remember, a full concept which includes the Self and the Other, understanding and feeling – something which makes you feel good.

Empatia: Heinz Kohut - Empathy: Heinz Kohut

EMPATIA: Heinz Kohut

EMPATHY: Heinz Kohut

-          Kohut’s Contributions
o   Highlighted other aspects of empathy, such as psychological nourishment

-          Meaning of psychological nourishment:
o   “A bond between human beings more powerful than love to contrast destructivity and dehumanization”

-          Kohut considered psychological nourishment one of the most important ideals to pursue

-          Kohut felt that empathic understanding of difference may help to avoid social conflicts and wars

-          IN THIS SENSE, Kohut felt empathy was essential for human survival

Kohut is the first psychoanalyst to place empathy at the centre in the relationship. For me he is also the first psychoanalyst who brought to psychoanalysis the colour of a deep sense of humanity. It was a missing colour in the picture and reading his books one can feel the stress and labour he undertook to try to harmonise this colour with the other existing ones. Franco followed him on this route and he carried on in Italy Kohut’s approach with patience and perseverance. Reading Kohut and particularly what he says about empathy, is a comforting empathic experience: in his words there is such a profound understanding of the human being and of what is being sought in the therapeutic relationship. Franco fully perceived the importance of Kohut’s message and became a messenger making available an essential psychological nourishment for us all.
