Biodiversità ed empatia - Biodiversity and empathy

Biodiversity and empathy

There is a lot of talk, nowadays, about the loss of animal and vegetable species linked to intensive, standardised and “privatised” agriculture which serves the interests of multinational agri-food companies (see note). I wonder what the relationship is between this loss of “diversity” and the ever increasing trend to the standardisation of human activities. Starting with birth, then school environment and continuing with working places, perhaps only when pensioning  human beings seem to come to have some right to living their “biodiversity”. And for younger generations even this possibility is at risk.
Franco, for instance, decided to pension rather early and in this way he could give room to what was special and different in him, to his creativity. This in time brought fruits such as the creation of a strong psychology of the Self Italian group, contributing to the dissemination of some fundamental concepts for the human being.
Difference is an important value and resource and it is typically human to note and appreciate it. As Franco says relating back to Kohut, empathic understanding of difference may help to avoid social conflicts and wars. At a moment when the  great needs of an ever increasing number of human beings are challenging us, recognizing the value of diversity could be vital. Through empathy we can safeguard human “biodiversity” and this could probably help us protect animal and vegetable biodiversity too.

Just two examples: since the beginning of the 20th century, 75% of vegetable varieties has disappeared. In Italy at the end of the 19th century there were 8.000 varieties of fruit, only 2.000 are left.

Simplicity
Sometimes I think to the monument that Franco was, I mean human monument, with reference to all the life that had been necessary to make him as he was: all the experiences, the thoughts, the love and the pain that brought him to become the special person so many people appreciated. To live a long life is a great opportunity; but we never think to the richness a person comes to be from living so long while always continuing to evolve…not even the person herself. To make each day some progress, without pretending to doing anything important, without aspiring to great attainments and nevertheless going on, step after step. I think this was Franco’s recipe and that of other persons who have achieved great accomplishments. A recipe to be tried without expectations, with simplicity.

Un nuovo approccio al paziente: Bio-psico-sociale-spirituale - A new approach to the patient: Bio-psycho-social-spiritual

A new approach to the patient: Bio-psycho-social-spiritual
Franco in the last period of his life elaborated on a concept of psychotherapy that was inclusive of the different aspects of life that are relevant for the person: biological, psychological, social, spiritual. He thought they all had to be considered to meet the person as a whole. Within this framework he referred to different theoretical contributions which he considered compatible with one another. Intersubjectivity was one of them and here it is how he explains what in practice this perspective implies for him:
“Dynamic intersubjective psychotherapy for me today does not consist in a situation, in which is possible, together with the patient,to try to understand what went wrong in his infancy and previous life-although some aspects of a new vision by the patient may be central to the efficacy of the treatment- but as an attempt to listen to the patient and  reach him, offering him a new relationship through which he becomes more aware of his difficulties and resources.”

Borghesi e proletari 2 - Bourgeois and proletarian 2

Borghesi e proletari 2

Bourgeois and proletarian  2
He was from the upper Neapolitan bourgeoisie and since his early years he had felt the attraction for communism: as an ideal of social justice that opposed the fascist mentality in which he was growing up and as the idea of the family he missed, being orphan of his father since childhood. When communism betrayed his hopes, as he learned about the horrors of soviet communism he took distance from it; but he never stopped to believe that an equal relationship, independent from class identity, is a fundamental element that sustains social justice.

Borghesi e proletari 1 - Bourgeois and proletarian 1

Borghesi e proletari 1

Bourgeois and proletarian 1
During the 20th century the concept of bourgeois and proletarian has developed and finally died. It was a clear category in our mind, it’s even strange to think about it now, how strongly it characterised the way of reading reality. It was a well shared social representation, as Moscovici would say. Franco was a bourgeois, I had never before met somebody so much aware of this social belonging. Perhaps for this reason he could behave differently from what a bourgeois was supposed to.

Con Basaglia - With Basaglia

With Basaglia
Thinking back to Franco’s relationship with Basaglia, of which others, perhaps, remember better than me the single details, some reflections arise which appear very much of actuality. Basaglia was the revolutionary, he was the one who could imagine a different world and propose it with binding force. Franco could not but take into account the given facts, the reality as it was: the necessary conditions to operate the change were not there, a lack of power somehow sanctioned by Basaglia’s illness and death. “I should have understood that he was ill”, Basaglia was behaving in a strange way and soon he died. Somehow, the difficulty of understanding each other, of two persons who were both engaged to overcome the social madness of psychiatric hospitals, is emblematic of the impasse situation we have in Italy since the Basaglia psychiatric reform was launched. We are still struggling to find the way to combine thought on mental illness, so advanced with Basaglia, and day to day practice. On this last one, daily practice,  the development of thought, meant in Matte Blanco’s terms as the translation of an emotional dimension, is now more than ever necessary. To this end Franco’s initiatives, experiences and reflections can help us greatly.

Risposte - Answers

Risposte
Answers
It would be so nice to be able to still receive answers from Franco, however it’s important to remember his passion for hypothesis…So many times we have discussed this topic and the importance for him of proposing his considerations to patients always in hypothetical form. It was a form of great respect, willingness to explore without preconceptions, substantial modesty and…knowing of not knowing. It was not only and not so much a philosophical stand, a way to conceive of the relationship and the therapy; it was as much the experience of so many situations in which it was important to be and to propose but without taking position. I think he had become and artist in the exercise of setting aside his ego or even better putting it in the service of the other. So we miss so much finding answer together with him.
