Proveniva da una famiglia dell’alta borghesia napoletana e fin da giovanissimo aveva sentito il richiamo del comunismo, come un ideale di giustizia sociale che si contrapponeva alla mentalità fascista in cui si trovava a crescere e come l’idea di una famiglia che in fondo gli era mancata, essendo rimasto orfano di padre da bambino. Se il comunismo lo deluse e ne prese le distanze quando gli orrori del comunismo sovietico iniziarono a filtrare, non smise mai di credere in una relazione paritaria, indipendente dalle appartenenze di classe, come elemento fondamentale che si trova alla base della giustizia sociale.

He was from the upper Neapolitan bourgeoisie and since his early years he had felt the attraction for communism: as an ideal of social justice that opposed the fascist mentality in which he was growing up and as the idea of the family he missed, being orphan of his father since childhood. When communism betrayed his hopes, as he learned about the horrors of soviet communism he took distance from it; but he never stopped to believe that an equal relationship, independent from class identity, is a fundamental element that sustains social justice.

Durante tutto il novecento la nozione di borghese e proletario si è sviluppata ed è andata a morire. Era una categoria ben presente nella nostra mente, sembra quasi strano a pensarci ora, quanto caratterizzasse il modo in cui si leggeva la realtà. Era una rappresentazione sociale molto condivisa, come direbbe Moscovici. Franco era un borghese, non avevo mai incontrato prima una persona che fosse così consapevole di questa appartenenza e forse anche per questo poteva comportarsi da non borghese.

During the 20th century the concept of bourgeois and proletarian has developed and finally died. It was a clear category in our mind, it’s even strange to think about it now, how strongly it characterised the way of reading reality. It was a well shared social representation, as Moscovici would say. Franco was a bourgeois, I had never before met somebody so much aware of this social belonging. Perhaps for this reason he could behave differently from what a bourgeois was supposed to.
