Con Basaglia

Ripensando alla relazione di Franco con Basaglia, di cui altri forse ricordano meglio di me i singoli particolari, sorgono spontanee alcune riflessioni su aspetti che sono di grande attualità. Basaglia era il rivoluzionario, colui che poteva immaginare un mondo diverso e proporlo con forza cogente. Franco non poteva non tener conto del dato di realtà: mancavano le condizioni per attuare determinati cambiamenti, una carenza di potere in qualche modo sancita dalla malattia e dalla morte di Basaglia. “Avrei dovuto capire che era malato”, Basaglia si stava comportando in modo strano e di lì a poco morì. In un certo senso, la difficoltà a capirsi, tra persone che comunque cercavano un modo per superare la follia sociale dei manicomi, è emblematica dell’impasse in cui abbiamo vissuto da quando la riforma psichiatrica è stata varata. Ci resta ancora oggi da comprendere come coniugare il pensiero sul concetto di malattia mentale, così avanzato in Basaglia e la prassi quotidiana. Su quest’ultima, lo sviluppo di un pensiero, inteso con Matte Blanco come traduzione di una dimensione emozionale, risulta quanto mai necessario. In questo compito ci possono essere di grande aiuto i contributi di Franco, le sue prassi, esperienze e riflessioni.

With Basaglia

Thinking back to Franco’s relationship with Basaglia, of which others, perhaps, remember better than me the single details, some reflections arise which appear very much of actuality. Basaglia was the revolutionary, he was the one who could imagine a different world and propose it with binding force. Franco could not but take into account the given facts, the reality as it was: the necessary conditions to operate the change were not there, a lack of power somehow sanctioned by Basaglia’s illness and death. “I should have understood that he was ill”, Basaglia was behaving in a strange way and soon he died. Somehow, the difficulty of understanding each other, of two persons who were both engaged to overcome the social madness of psychiatric hospitals, is emblematic of the impasse situation we have in Italy since the Basaglia psychiatric reform was launched. We are still struggling to find the way to combine thought on mental illness, so advanced with Basaglia, and day to day practice. On this last one, daily practice,  the development of thought, meant in Matte Blanco’s terms as the translation of an emotional dimension, is now more than ever necessary. To this end Franco’s initiatives, experiences and reflections can help us greatly.

Sarebbe bello poter ancora ricevere delle risposte da Franco, tuttavia bisogna ricordare la sua passione per le ipotesi…Quante volte abbiamo discusso su questo argomento e sull’importanza che lui attribuiva al proporre al paziente le proprie considerazioni sempre in forma ipotetica. Una forma di grande rispetto dell’altro, una disponibilità ad esplorare sempre senza preconcetti, una modestia grande anche…il sapere di non sapere. Nasceva non solo o non tanto da una posizione filosofica, un modo di intendere il rapporto e di pensare la terapia ma altrettanto dall’esperienza di tante situazioni in cui era importante saper stare proponendo ma senza prendere posizione.  Penso che era come diventato un artista in questo esercizio che richiede di mettere da parte il proprio io o forse meglio metterlo al servizio dell’altro. Perciò manca proprio tanto il poter trovare insieme delle risposte.

It would be so nice to be able to still receive answers from Franco, however it’s important to remember his passion for hypothesis…So many times we have discussed this topic and the importance for him of proposing his considerations to patients always in hypothetical form. It was a form of great respect, willingness to explore without preconceptions, substantial modesty and…knowing of not knowing. It was not only and not so much a philosophical stand, a way to conceive of the relationship and the therapy; it was as much the experience of so many situations in which it was important to be and to propose but without taking position. I think he had become and artist in the exercise of setting aside his ego or even better putting it in the service of the other. So we miss so much finding answer together with him.

Incoraggiare il paziente ad esprimersi

Guardando il filmato proiettato durante la giornata di commemorazione è stato bello, in alcune immagini, vedere la tua espressione di “sorriso incoraggiante”. C’era un modo tutto particolare con cui cercavi di sostenere l’altro nel momento in cui magari aveva un momento di difficoltà nell’esprimersi oppure sentivi che necessitava di una partecipazione rinforzata o anche semplicemente ti coinvolgeva. Esprimevi fisicamente il tuo supporto con leggeri movimenti del viso, un sorriso accennato, come dire sì, sì…sì? C’era come un interrogativo ma senza curiosità, solo con l’attesa, qualcosa che si poteva anche non notare ma tuttavia era efficace. Una piccola lezione di partecipazione gioiosa. Da dove scaturiva la gioia se non dalla gioia che potevi immaginare nell’altro “guardandolo” al di là di ogni apparenza?

Encouraging the patient’s self expression

Looking at the film projected during the commemoration day, it has been moving to see in some images you “encouraging smile” expression. You had a very special way to support the other when he/she had some difficulty in expressing him/herself, or because you felt there was the need of a reinforced participation or simply because you felt involved. You used to physically express your support with small movements of the face, a light smile, as saying yes… yes…yes? There was some sort of questioning but without curiosity, just the awaiting, something that one could also miss to note but was nevertheless effective. A little lesson of joyous participation. Where did joy flow out from, but from the joy that you could imagine in the other, looking at the real person behind appearances?

la tua anima nel vento - your soul in the wind

Sabato 25 febbraio 2013 c’è stata la commemorazione di Franco con gli amici dell’Isipsé,  a Trastevere presso la John Cabot University, nella sala in cui avevamo anche festeggiato i suoi 80 anni e in cui hanno avuto luogo molti altri eventi che lo hanno visto protagonista. Con l’accompagnamento delle musiche di Mozart siamo entrati nella stanza della sua ultima intervista filmata e Franco non ha mancato di dirci con molta chiarezza che lo psicoterapeuta non dovrebbe essere motivato dal guadagno materiale ricordandoci che la terapia funziona quando è amorevole.

Saturday 25th February 2013 in Rome there has been the commemoration of Franco with the Isipsé friends. It has taken place at John Cabot University in Trastevere, in the hall where we had also celebrated his 80^th birthday and where many other events have seen his participation. Accompanied by Mozart music we have entered the room of his last filmed interview and Franco has not forgotten to tell us very clearly that working in the psychotherapy field we should not be  motivated by economic gain because it's kindness and love that make the difference.

un pensiero veloce - a quick thought

Franco era breve nelle sue comunicazioni. In generale non gli piaceva stare molto al telefono e se scriveva messaggi o lettere erano brevi. Sembra strano in un mondo in cui tutti quanti inondiamo gli altri di comunicazioni prolisse, di informazioni, di pubblicazioni. Però era invece molto propenso a chiacchierare, a raccontare di sé. E anche questo mi sembra strano, in un mondo in cui non c'è più tempo per ascoltare l'altro...Modi d'altri tempi forse oppure suggerimenti da sperimentare?

Franco was short in his communications. He didn't like to speak for a long time over the phone and when he wrote messages or letters they were brief. It seemed strange in a world in which we all flood others with verbose communications, information, publications. Instead, he was quite prone to talk, to tell about himself. This was strange too, in a world where there is no time to listen to others...Ways of old times or perhaps suggestions of something we could try?

Traduzioni e Darwin – Translations and Darwin

Franco, nato nel 1925, è cresciuto nel periodo fascista. Compagno di scuola dell’attuale presidente della repubblica Giorgio Napolitano, come lui ha preso una strada politica molto diversa. Tuttavia, nella ricerca della libertà, ha poi trovato una strada che lo ha portato ad andare oltre la politica. Questa strada della libertà era molto legata alla lingua e alla cultura inglese.  L’inglese era all’epoca una lingua che portava a pensieri, emozioni ed esperienze che l’Italiano sembrava precludere. Non ho mai capito come abbia fatto a imparare l’inglese, certamente era portato per le lingue. L’interesse per il comunismo lo spinse infatti ad imparare anche il russo. Ad ogni modo, grazie alla conoscenza dell’inglese, ottenne alcuni dei primi guadagni traducendo in italiano l’Origine della specie di Darwin. Era subito dopo la seconda guerra mondiale e l’opera di Darwin era rivoluzionaria. E’ curioso notare che anche John Bowlby dovette subire il forte fascino di Darwin cui dedicò un’approfondita biografia, era una comunanza che a Franco piaceva. Tradurre è rimasto poi un “mestiere” che Franco ha continuato a praticare per tutta la vita, introducendo Kohut alla lingua italiana, nonché svariati altri autori. Con la sua generosità, quando “scopriva” qualche autore interessante, cominciava subito a cercare un editore che lo volesse pubblicare in Italiano, impresa sempre irta di ostacoli. Tradurre gli ha tenuto compagnia in alcuni momenti difficili della vita e gli ha permesso di esprimere anche un tipo di ruolo intellettuale oggi probabilmente molto trascurato, perché è solo attraverso una comprensione profonda e competente che è possibile rendere il pensiero di un autore in un'altra lingua.

Franco, born in 1925, grew up during Fascism. School mate of our actual president of the Italian republic Giorgio Napolitano, like him, he took quite a different political path. However, in his quest for freedom, he found a way which brought him to overcome politics. The path of freedom, for him, was very much related to the English language and culture. The English language was at the time a language which brought with it thoughts, emotions and experiences that the Italian language seemed to preclude. I’ve never exactly understood how he managed to learn English, he was certainly endowed for languages. In fact, his interest for Communism pushed him to learn Russian too. Anyway, thanks to his knowledge of the English language, he got some of his first earnings translating in Italian Darwin’s Origin of Species. It was just after World War II and Darwin’s work was revolutionary. It’s curious to note that John Bowlby too clearly felt a great interest for Darwin, to whom he dedicated an in-depth biography; it was a commonality that Franco was pleased about. Translating has been a “craft” that Franco has continued to practice for all his life, introducing Kohut to the Italian language and many other authors. With all his generosity, when he “discovered” some interesting author, he immediately started to look for an editor willing to publish it in Italian, which was always a hurdle. Translating has been a company for him in some difficult times and it has allowed him to express also a kind of intellectual role nowadays often  neglected, because it is through in-depth and competent understanding that it is possible to fully render the thinking of an author in another language.

Omosessualità - Homosexuality

Ricordo quella volta in cui rimanesti malissimo per la reazione di un collega d’oltreoceano al tuo articolo su Kohut e le omosessualità. Dal tuo punto di vista l’articolo era una grossa apertura, in un contesto che ha sempre avuto grande difficoltà a trattare questo tema in generale; parlarne in relazione a una figura importante, un punto di riferimento come Kohut,  richiedeva coraggio e molto tatto. Ma il collega, omosessuale dichiarato, avrebbe voluto probabilmente qualcosa di più deciso e non si era reso conto di quanto invece il tuo gesto rappresentasse un avanzamento sostanziale. L’articolo ti era costato molta fatica, come sempre quando dovevi scrivere, ma anche in questo caso penso che per te fosse un atto dovuto. Si era trattato di una dimensione importante nella vita di Kohut e parlarne poteva essere molto significativo per tanti. Il nostro concetto di autorità a volte ci impedisce di vedere l’essere umano nella figura di chi per noi è un’ “autorità”. Tu eri molto indipendente in questo senso e proprio per questo penso che tu abbia potuto contribuire a illuminare la figura di Kohut, riconoscendo sempre la sensatezza delle scelte e delle esperienze che lui ha fatto e quindi quelle che ognuno di noi può fare.

I remember that time you got upset because of the reaction of an overseas colleague  to your publication on Kohut and the homosexualities . From your point of view the article represented and important opening, in such a context where this was already a difficult topic overall; hence,  to speak about it in relation to some important person, a reference person like Kohut, required courage and a lot of tact. But the colleague, declared homosexual, probably wanted something more and may be didn’t realise how much your initiative was to be considered a substantial advancement. You worked hard on this article, as always happened when you had to write, but I think it was for you like a duty. Homosexuality had been an important dimension in Kohut’s life and speaking about this could be very significant for many. Our concept of authority sometimes stops us from looking for the human being in the authority figure. You were very indipendent in this respect and probably it is for this reason that you have been able to contribute to illuminate Kohut’s figure, always recognizing the meaningfulness of choices and experiences he made and thus of those we  can do too.
